ReplyDeleteMere exposure effect - the more often the bill gets pushed into the Senate the more likely it is to pass due to increasing attractiveness, as was the reason for the last democrat voter choosing no in order to allow a re-vote.
Group Polarization- both parties talk through how they vote with each other and the idea of voting as such increases in popularity. Some people view gun violence as a:
DeleteSuperordinate Goal, so some members of each political party vote with the other side despite their differences in order to reach their goal.
Some people in the audience yelled out and hollered at the Senators, due to being in the crowd they followed the principle of deindividualization, even when they usually wouldn't behave in such a manner.

ReplyDeleteDue to the explosions at the Boston marathon, other events such as the Bellin run are now revising their safety programs in case of such disasters. Most event planners thought security was good enough before but now they are going to take extra precaution at future events.
How our four words relate to this article:
*Altruism: unselfish regard for the welfare of others
-law enforcement is trying increase security at future events.
*Social exchange theory: our behavior is driven by the desire to maximize benefits and minimize costs.
-We should help those that need our help, law enforcement is trying to minimize costs which in this case would be the lives of people.
*Superordinate goals: shared goals that override group differences
-The shared goal would be trying to improve security so that people will be more safe at events.
*Group polarization: the enhancement of a group's prevailing inclinations through a discussion within a group.
-The more people talk about increasing security, the more they agreed it'd be a good idea.
http://www.cnn.com/2013/04/16/us/boston-heroes/index.html?iref=allsearch
ReplyDeleteMy article is about the Boston marathon explosion. The article talks about how doctors, other medical staff, and runners all rushed to help the injured victims while others ran away in fear.
Altruism is unselfish regard for the welfare of others. After the bomb went off, medical personnel and other people close by, rushed to help the victims without worrying about what could happen if another bomb would go off. They cared more about the victims than their own safety.
Bystander effect is defined as when more people are present, individuals are less likely to offer help. Some people in the crowd probably ran past the victims without offering aid because they figured someone else would help the victims.
Social exchange theory is behavior that is driven by a desire to maximize benefits and minimize costs. People didn't help the victims because their safety was in danger(cost) and they may have figured that the benefits (helping the injured) was not worth the cost of possibly losing their own life.
Social responsibility norm is the expectation that people will help those dependent upon them. Doctors and bystanders helped the victims because the victims' lives were dependent on them.

ReplyDeleteThis article is about the fertilizer explosiong in Texas. It talks about how devistating the blast was. The blast was so strong that it was registered as a 2.1 magnitude earthquake. The blast could also be heard from 50 miles away.
The blast was very deadly and the casualties are not yet determined.
This news event relates to social responsibility because the firefighters and perametics felt they had to help because they knew that people depended on them.
This article also relates to cooperation because even if some firefighters didnt want to help the shared goal of the firefighters made them help.
The article also relates to reciprocity norm because people at a nursing home helped elderly people get to a safe place possibly because those elderly helped them before.
http://q13fox.com/2013/04/16/bostonians-and-others-rush-to-support-stranded-visitors/#axzz2Qp1p5200
ReplyDeleteThe article is about Bostonians who offer up their home to people in need and provide food, shelter and anything else the people need. They show the reciprocity norm when one man shares that he wouldn't have finished the race in 2009 without the help of random strangers. He then offers up his bed to whoever might need it as his way of returning the favor. Social responsibility is shown when the international runners are left without cell phone accessor places to stay. They are dependent upon Americans to help them find food and shelter in their homes. They also use the social exchange theory because the benefits of helping people will out weigh the cost of time and resources. -Beth R
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/18/world/europe/more-children-in-greece-start-to-go-hungry.html?hp
ReplyDeleteThis article is about the increasing problem of children in Greece who are going hungry because of the rising unemployment rates, because their parents are unable to provide enough food for them. It talks about elementary school children who resort to garbage cans as a source of food, and how ten percent of Greek children are malnourished or are in danger of being malnourished.
1. Fundamental attribution error-----when you overemphasize someones personality and underemphasize the situation. This relates to the article because some people may think that the unemployed people of Greece are lazy, instead of seeing the struggling economy.
2. Just World Phenomenon----people deserve what they get/get what they deserve. Some people may think that the people who are unemployed are getting what they deserve, maybe because they were selfish in the past or they didn't work hard enough.
3. Altruism----unselfish regard for the welfare of others. Some children who do have enough to eat were willing to share their lunches with the kids who did not have enough to eat.

ReplyDelete"Who's to Blame For the Middle Class Struggle?"
http://money.cnn.com/2013/04/18/news/economy/middle-class-poor/index.html?iid=s_mpm
This article discusses how middle class individuals play the blame game when it comes to financial struggles. Some blame the rich, but many are putting blame on the poor for being too reliant on government money and services that middle class individuals fund through taxes.
Fundamental Attribution Error:
Some middle class individuals feel that poor people are lacking jobs and money because they are lazy.
"A good majority of them are just too lazy and sorry to work and pay their own way. The government gives them free food stamps (to buy cigarettes and whiskey), free housing so they can stay home and have more babies so they can get more money..." writes one reader, who resents having to pay for other people's health insurance.
In group Bias:
Many middle class citizens tend to think that middle class people are more hard-working than the rich or the poor.
Marty Slover, 53, gets annoyed when he sees people living in subsidized housing that's nicer than what he can afford on his middle school teacher's salary. The Illinois resident added that he doesn't mind giving a helping hand to those who truly need it, but he's frustrated by those who could work but choose not to, especially when his taxes are funding their sloth.
Just-world Phenomenon:
Many of these middle class individuals feel poor people deserve to be poor because it must be as a result of something they did.
Social responsibility:
People tend to help those that depend on them (like children). But some middle class people feel that the poor shouldn't depend on government money, and that taking care of the poor should not be their responsibility.
http://money.cnn.com/2013/04/18/news/economy/suburbs-jobs/index.html?hpt=hp_t3
ReplyDeleteIn the past few years there has been a shift in jobs from the cities to the suburbs. This is diminishing the opportunity for poor people in the inner city to get jobs.
Ingroup: people who you share a similar identity with. The people in the suburbs are an ingroup because they make the jobs more readily available for themselves excluding the people from the city.
Out group: people who you do not share a common identity with. The people in the city are the out group.
Mere exposure effect: the tendency to like new stimuli the more you are exposed to it. Since the businesses are less concentrated in the suburbs there is less interaction between businesses and therefore less cooperation.
Stereotype: a common misconception of a whole group of people. The article makes a stereotype that people who live in the city are poor.

ReplyDeletehttp://www.cnn.com/2013/04/14/health/loker-profile/index.html
Prejudice is one term foUnd in this article because this woman is getting unjustifiable attitudes because of the two diseases she has.
This may be because of social inequality because people may try to justify why she had that disease or why her face was like that, so they may just say she is deformed and try to make fun of her for that.
Mere exposure effect is the idea that when one is exposed to a stimuli more they tend to like it. This can be seen with the girl because it may have taken awhile but she is starting to like her difference more and more because her struggles allowed her to become a stronger and.better person.
Just world phenomenon could be seen here as well. Because she has this disease people may say that she "deserved it" or she must have done something to receive what she got, which is the same idea as the just world phenomenon

War survivor creates bionic body parts
ReplyDeletehttp://www.cnn.com/2013/04/18/tech/innovation/david-sengeh-sierra-leone-bionic/index.html
Reciprocity Norm= David Sengeh, who grew up in war-torn Sierra Leone, exemplifies this concept because his early experiences encouraged him to create bionic/synthetic limbs to help those with their limbs cut off during war. Because he had seen the atrocities of war, he in turn wanted to do whatever he could to help others.
Mere Exposure Effect= Although his invention/design is not available yet, once his product enters the public, the more of the bionic limbs that people will see will cause them to like his product even more and possibly buy them if they ever need a prosthetic limb.
Informational Social Influence= If a friend buys Sengeh's bionic limb and tells you that they are as comfortable as they were said to feel, one may begin to believe that person's perception of reality about that product.
Cognitive Dissonance Theory= Sengeh is trying to reduce any dissonance by creating an awesome product for a good price. Rather than having to think "I like this product, but it costs a lot of money", they can feel good about buying it at a good cost.

After 3 days of being late she was sent to lunch detention where she had to sit by herself and stare at a wall. She did not understand why she was being punished. The parents say blame us. Conflict: perceived incompatibility of actions and goals the girl being late was causing conflict. Conformity: adjusting behavior or thoughts to fit a group standard they were trying to get the girl to conform to be on time. Fundamental attribution error: when describing others behaviors we over epheasize disposition and under emphasize the situation the teachers did not take the newborn into account of the girl being late.

ReplyDeleteTis about gun control.
Cognitive dissonance- some people that voted no to passing it could have thought that it should be passed but only voted no because of their parties beliefs. They needed to think about what is best though and could have reasoned that they are being loyal.
Obedience- they could have been told to vote a certain way and they obeyed that order
Informational social influence- this is present because you could hear facts that you truly feel are right so you go with that side of the argument.
My article is about autism awareness month. The article uses social responsibility as the people think these children need help to be better understood, so they are promoting awareness of their treatment and disorder.
ReplyDeleteAt the Pig memtioned in the article, the customers had a superordinate goal to work together donating their extra change in order to fill the whole wall with puzzle pieces.
They are using a form of mere exposure affect by placing the colorful puzzle pieces that represent autism awareness everywhere. People will begin to recoginize what they mean and start to enjoy them and hopefully the cause behind them as well.

ReplyDeleteSeveral letters sent to high-ranking officials, including one to the President and a senator, tested positive for the toxin ricin. One suspect was apprehended, and another suspect was taken into custody for a letter sent to a judge.
Conflict- this man clearly did not agree with the ideas of the two he sent the letters to, thus creating conflict.
Group Polarization: It is possible that these two suspects talked about their political beliefs, thus causing their hatred for these people to grow, causing them to send ricin. Group polarization in this case was made by the discussion of political beliefs causing their tendancy for hatred to grow.
Foot-in-the-door phenomenon: it is possible that these men attended a political rally, and then when asked to send a letter, he did so because he was more willing to do so after the political rally.

ReplyDeleteScapegoat theory- I'm not sure exactly on the reason for blaming the terrorists for the explosion but for just reading the article it seems like they just assumed and put the blame on the subject of terrorism.
Social exchange theory- the EMTS, firefighters and bystanders had to weigh the benefits and costs when deciding whether or not to help. Either they would feel good about what they did or not even make it out alive.
Reciprocity norm- the people of the community might give back because the people who helped others close to them.

ReplyDeleteThis article discusses how Boston is coping with the bombing and the current status of where investigators are with finding the bombers.
Superordinate goal: The shared goal of Boston citizens is to support the families of casualties in the bombings and "make room for love". They are putting aside their differences to provide assistance to the family members.
Social Responsibility: Citizens near the bombing felt it was their responsibility to help those who were injured in the explosion. They helped those who were perceived as needing help.
Scapegoat theory: they are looking for the person who planted the bomb, we need somebody to blame for all the people hurt in the explosion. Investigators know that it will take a while to find the person who planted the bomb; people are just very anxious to know who they can blame.

ReplyDeleteThere are arguments about whether or not California made the right choice for banning conversion therapy for people under 18 and if it was an injustified infringement on freedom of speech.
Groupthink: the federal court had to be in this mode of thinking in order to make a decision to ban this therapy or not.
Prejudice: people think that people who are homosexual need conversion therapy, meaning that something has to be wrong wi them.
Fundamental attribution error: people who are in therapy are thought to be that there is something wrong with them and that its their parents' fault when that might not be the real reason why they're in therapy.

ReplyDeleteSocial Facilitation- at the Marathon, people ran better because it was a well known task and they were in front of people. That is what social facilitation means.
Social Exchange Theory- The costs outweighed the benefits for some people who decided not to help. They thought the cost of their life was worth more than the benefits of what would happen if they would have helped.
Bystander Effect- Since there were a lot of people around, a lot of people just stood around because they didn't want to be the one to step up and help.

This article is about the explosion of the fertilizer plant in Texas that occured this past Wednesday. This article specifically talks about the missing firefighters and other responders after the explosion devastated many surrounding buildings and structures.
Altruism- firefighters are altruistic people in nature; they put themselves in harms way to help out others in need.
Just World Phenomenon- Someone thinking in this way could possibly think that the people that live near the plant that may have perished deserved it because they live too close to a potentially dangerous area.
Social Responsibility- The firefighters are put up on a pedestal socially to help others that need it no matter what. Although, a firefighter is more inclined to help a child or woman in danger before a man (in some cases).

bystander effect- alot of people are doing nothing to help the victims of the blast who have no where to stay or lost everything because they believe that someone else would do it and that they dont have to.
social responsibility- those who are helping the victims feel responsible for there well being and feel it is there job to help them.
Just-World phenomenon- People who believe the just world phenomen may believe those who lost there homes or were injured by the blast deserved it and that those who didn't deserved to walk away from it safely.

ReplyDeletethis article used in goup bias, this is because we think we are better than the people who bombed the boston marathon
informational social influence could be shown in this article because at first, before anyone knew any type of cause for these bombs, many people talked about it being terrorism and then many people started to believe it was terrorism because many people conformed to others beliefs.
The just world phenomenon could work in this situation where the guilty party gets arrested because they deserve it for bombing the marathon.
http://www.cnn.com/2013/04/17/health/boston-campbell-nurse/index.html?hpt=hp_t2
ReplyDeleteThis is about a Boston bombing victim that had a good nurse that stayed by her side.
Altruism- this man was unselfish and wanted to help save someone else's life.
Social Responsibility- she needed help because she couldn't get better on her own.
Obedience- he could have gave up on trying to save her, but promised that he'd take care of her.
I had the "Investigatiors in Boston Blasts Hunt two Men From the Scene" Article. http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/04/16/17784776-investigators-in-boston-blasts-hunt-2-men-from-scene?lite
ReplyDeleteBasically the article said that there were many surveilance cameras that caught 2 men on tape. Apparently one man sat a black backpack down in front of the scene and ran away. There was also evidence of a man talking on his cellphone on top of a building. So they are combing cell phone records trying to find the conversation. They also can't decide if they want to post a picture of the men because it could help them and hurt them. The bomb was made of a pressure cooker with nail type things used as shrapnel and also a battery used in toy cars.
1.) Social resposibility- the expectation that people help those that are dependent. When the bomb went off, there were many people that couldn't moved and needed help but there were also many people that were perfectly fine and could help. So the uninjured were expected to help the injured.
2.) Just world phenomenon- people deserve what they get and get what they deserve. The bombers of this incident could justify what they did by saying "Bostinians are just plain bad people so they deserved all of what they got".
3.) Social Exchange Theory- Behavior is driven by the need to maximize benefits and minimize costs. The people that were not injured and just ran away without helping the severly hurt people use the social exchange theory to justify what they were doing (or not rather). They thought in their mind that they weren't getting enough benefit for the cost (possibly risking their life to save an injured person because who knows what else would happen).

ReplyDeleteStory: a family of four died from carbon monoxide poisoning after the dad started the care in the garage. His death was ruled suicide and the other three accidental.
Just world phenomenon: they died because they deserved it and they deserved to die.
FAE: some people might think that the dad was just simply an idiot and started the car in the garage, but won’t think about the situation.
Aggression: there was aggression between the mother and the father.

ReplyDeleteThis article was reporting on what Obama said about the Boston bombing and the current situation of the Boston bombing.
Social facilitation: because Obama is good at making speeches when he made his speech he did better with the crowed there then he would have by himself.
Social responsibility: people are helping people in Boston because they feel that they need help.
Just world phenomenon: according to this the people that died deserved to die.
